My job at the Archer Academy: Head of Maths.

The subject I teach: Maths. As Marcus du Sautoy said, ‘Mathematics has beauty and romance. It is not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It is an extraordinary place; it’s worth spending time there’.

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: Algebra – this is the language of Mathematics. It’s amazing that you can take incredibly complicated ideas and write them down on paper in just a handful of symbols.

Two top facts about me:

  1. I am a keen amateur sailor and I love standing on the edge of a dinghy held on only by a rope (trapeze) for the adrenalin rush.
  2. The only food I don’t like is edible tree fungus.

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: a barrister. 

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: Academy: Working together with your Maths teachers to provide a creative, challenging and inspirational Maths curriculum, both in your lessons and out of them.

My message to our new Year 7s: You are very privileged to be coming to such an amazing school in September. Make the most of all the opportunities open to you, and don’t be scared about making new friends and trying new things. It might seem daunting now, but you will feel at home here surprisingly fast, and there are plenty of people around to support you as you settle in. We are looking forward to welcoming you.

My job at the Archer Academy: Second in Maths department

The subject I teach: Maths, ‘If Science is the map of the universe, Maths is the language it’s written in.’ Astrophysicist from The Planetarium.

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: Number, breaking the bonds of numbers then building them back up to create new numbers and factors is fascinating.

Two top facts about me:

  1. I love watching movies.
  2. I sing a lot of maths songs, badly, when teaching maths

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: an accountant 

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: Creating inspirational lessons based on interesting relatable facts.

My job at the Archer Academy: Maths teacher

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: Higher maths GCSE topics as we delve further into the beauty & symmetry of mathematics. I love anything algebra based; as it is basically a fun puzzle that needs solving.

Two top facts about me:

1. I used to be a drum and bass DJ

2. I used to be afraid of heights until I faced my fear and did bungee jumping and now I love any height related activity like climbing or paragliding.

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: Living in Las Vegas or Rio

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: Teaching further maths to year 10 and 11

My message to our new Year 7s: Enjoy every single part of your Archer journey –my old year 11 tutor group said “it can really go by in a flash, which just shows that we were having fun!”

My job at the Archer Academy: Maths teacher

The subject I teach: Mathematics, GCSE further maths

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: It will be circle theorem, because you could get stuck in a given problem for hours, and couldn’t work out the solution; but the solution is actually right in front of you the whole entire time.

Two top facts about me: 

  1. I am also a Reservist in the British Army – my job title is Weapon System Engineer. Basically I get to fix, inspect and test fire all of the weapons from small arms to armoured vehicles that the British Army uses.
  2. I have been to 21 countries and counting

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: Electrical and mechanical engineer

My message to our new Year 7s: Work Hard, Play Hard

My job at the Archer Academy: Maths teacher

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: Algebra has to be my favourite. It is a special type of maths language that can be applied everywhere!

Two top facts about me:

  1. I enjoy anything creative and can make henna candles and plates.
  2. I love cooking and experimenting with different cuisines.

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: A make-up artist or henna artist.

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: Meeting our new year 7s!

My message to our new Year 7s: Enjoy the journey you are about to embark on at the Archer Academy. Make friends, grab every opportunity with both hands, engage in the learning & just have fun! You are part of a very special family!

My job at the Archer Academy: Maths teacher 

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: Algebra! It’s basically solving puzzles. I also find that my students really enjoy it too. 

Two top facts about me: 

  1. Whilst I love maths, I also enjoy lots of other things too! I love music, dance, languages and my favourite A-level was actually history
  1. I love Excel. I used it a lot in my old job in finance and now I love nothing more than tidying up a disorganised spreadsheet!

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: an events organiser (lots of opportunities to use spreadsheets!). 

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: Getting to know all of my new students and helping them develop, both mathematically, and more generally.

My message to our new Year 7s: The Archer Academy is an incredibly friendly place to be. There is a real sense of community here and we really do all look out for one another. You are entering a hugely exciting time of your lives so enjoy it and make the most of all the opportunities the school has to offer because there are loads!
