My job at the Archer Academy: Head of Music

The subjects I teach: Music.

The areas of my subject I most enjoy teaching are:  I love music, probably even more than I love cake, which is a lot. I most enjoy creating a class orchestra during music lessons – this is where everyone has an instrument, and a part to play – and we perform as a big group. It’s a great way to start if you’ve never played an instrument before, and everybody really enjoys working as a team to get their notes or rhythms right. Sometimes both! This term Year 8 have learnt to play Eye of The Tiger, and Year 7 played Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter AND the James Bond Theme. I also like singing – loudly, especially pop music and the opening to the Lion King.

The enrichment activities I am hoping to run after school: There are a number of musical opportunities for you in the enrichment programme. Rock Band, Show Choir, Musical Theatre and Archer Guitar Ensemble.  We also offer a Grade 5 Theory course for any advanced musicians. I also run the school choir and orchestra during lunch-times, always welcoming new members.

What I look forward to at the Archer Academy: Probably lunch! That’s because Choir and Orchestra are during lunch-time, of course! I’m very proud of the musical performances we have produced, and I love spending time with those students who are passionate about Music. I also really look forward to teaching enthusiastic students in lessons, no prior musical experience required!

Two top facts about me:

  1. I can yodel.
  1. I really like skiing.

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: Rather bored. I might pursue a career in traffic law enforcement.

My message to our new Year 7 pupils: In the Creative Arts Department we work hard and take our subjects seriously, so be ready! There will be many opportunities for students to explore their creative sides, through music, drama and dance. We hold a number of different performances and showcases throughout the year. If you want to get involved in orchestra or choir – look out for notices, or let me know in your lessons. Enjoy your summer holidays!
