What will I be learning about in Year 7?

You will start off in mixed ability groups for the first 2 weeks of Year 7. Following this, you will be set according to your ability. This is nothing to worry about and the classes do change, so you will have the chance to move up groups.

Throughout the year, you will experience a wide range of team and individual sports such as rugby, netball, cricket, basketball, rounders, trampolining, athletics, football and badminton. During these activities you will build on your previous sporting knowledge and hopefully experience some new sports as well.

You will also be learning about the PE Big Ideas, which will teach you about Human Anatomy and Health, Fitness and Well-being, along with how to analyse your own performance.

How will it be different from primary school?

PE will be quite different from primary school PE. The main difference will be the fantastic new facilities you will have at the Lower School campus on Stanley Road. You are going to have a lovely indoor sports hall with a climbing wall, 3G astro pitch and MUGA courts which is all very exciting.

Another difference will be that the teachers are PE specialists, so they will be in the perfect position to get you making as much progress as possible. Listen to them and you will hopefully enjoy PE and hit the targets you are set.

We will also try to increase your level of skills by offering various sports enrichments and after school clubs so you can practice the sports you enjoy most. Use of ICT such as iPads will also aid your learning in PE.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed each half term in each sport. Assessments will vary and will usually be based on one or more of the following:

  • Performance (Big Idea 1)
  • Analysis (Big Idea 2)
  • Human Anatomy (Big Idea 3)
  • Health, Fitness and Well-being (Big Idea 4)

What can I do to help myself get off to an excellent start?

Keep healthy and active over the summer and if you’re not already involved in sport outside of school, consider joining a club. It will make a really big difference to your ability in sport if you are able to practice skills outside of school. Also, keep up to date with current sporting news so that you are aware of what is happening in high level sport.
