Name: Elisa Thève

My job at the Archer Academy: Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages

The subjects I will teach: French and Spanish

The areas of my subject I most enjoy teaching are: French culture! Being French, I enjoy sharing about my country, especially the school system which is quite different from here! I also have a peculiar fascination for idioms! Maybe you can teach me some idioms you know if you speak other languages at home?

The enrichment activities I am hoping to run after school: I would like to run again a French exchange enrichment. Last year we sent videos, letters, photos, coins and even typical English food to students in a school in France… and we receive some in return!

I am also running a Bullet Journal enrichment… if you love stationary and making lists this is the one for you!

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: I can’t wait to see my form start their GCSE and be the senior students of lower school. I am sure they will be perfect role models for you. I am also obviously looking forward to meeting you!

Two top facts about me:

  1. Hiking in the mountains is my favourite thing in the world.
  2. I lived in France and Ireland.

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: a photographer, especially of urban landscapes and nature. It has been my passion ever since I was big enough to hold my dad’s camera.

My message to our new Year 7 pupils: I am sure you will be as amazed as I was when I started working here when you will discover all the incredible opportunities students are offered and how much they are enjoying them. You have no idea of all the amazing things you will be up to this year!

Name: Ms Chocarro

My job at the Archer Academy: Teacher of Spanish.

The subject I will teach: Spanish

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: I love all aspects of the language teaching but I find fascinating to see how the students learn to communicate, understand and speak in the new language.

Two top facts about me:

  1. I was born in Spain and I lived there until 1990. Afterwards, I went travelling and in 1993 I settled in London (One of my favourite cities in the world).
  2. I practise yoga nearly every day: so you may find me doing a shoulder stand or a warrior pose in the staff room!

If I wasn’t a teacher I would be: A dancer, a salsa dancer. I’ve always loved dancing (contemporary and Latin dance) but after living in Cuba during my studies o completely fell I love with the rhythm, the beat, the warmth of the Cuban salsa dance.

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: To meet all the new students in year 7 and to prepare the years 11 students for their GCSE exams.

My message to our new Year 7s: It is lovely to have you at the school; I am looking forward to help you all develop an interest in languages so you can become great linguists..

Name: Mr Mustafa

My job at the Archer Academy: Head of Year 10

The subject I will teach:I am a Spanish teacher and love everything related to languages and other cultures!

The area of my subject I most enjoy teaching: Translating idiomatic expressions! Have you ever wondered why we say things like “it’s raining cats and dogs” or “barking up the wrong tree?” These are expressions that are unique to English and I’ve always been intrigued by how Spanish speaking countries use their language in creative ways to express themselves. They show us that learning another language is to understand a completely new way of thinking. Translating these phrases and messages allows us to unlock the culture, heart and soul of Spain and Latin America so that we are able to better understand and celebrate our cultural differences.

The enrichment activity I hope to run after school: Beginners Portuguese, Novel writing and Foreign Cinema!

Two top facts about me:

  1. I am a keen traveller and try to visit as many different countries as I can. I have visited a range of countries from Japan to Finland and have lived in Argentina and Portugal.
  2. I’m a self-professed Harry Potter geek!

If I weren’t a teacher I would be: a foreign affairs journalist.

What I am most looking forward to this year at the Archer Academy: I feel very privileged to be part of the Archer Academy community and I am really looking forward to my year group moving to Upper School. I know that they will be fantastic role models for you all!

My message to our new Year 7s: Embrace every moment of what is going to be an incredible year! Make sure you give every new opportunity your best and explore all that your new school, new teachers and new friends have to offer you and if you need anything at all, I will be happy to help!
